Useful (and Fun!) Dragon Age 2 Mods

Mods can do a lot to enhance your game, and Dragon Age has a dedicated mod community creating everything from new adventures (for DA:O) to utilities to give more functionality to our game. DA 2 doesn’t have a released toolset, meaning our ability to mod is limited, but skilled modders have created some great Dragon Age 2 enhancements anyway. Here are the ones I found most useful and most fun:

All Chests Unlocked
For those who those who’d rather not need to keep a rogue in the party at all times. You will not get the exp you would have gotten from unlocking the chests, however.

Abilities Unlocks
Completely opens up the abilities for use by everyone, so any mage can be a healer, for example, and your Hawke can use companion specializations. Only works for new games or new companions unless you enable it with the developer console. This mod is designed to go with the Total Freedom mod which strips the pre-reqs from abilities and cuts cooldown times in half.

Hide Weapons
Making the apostates in your party seem a bit less stoopid. No more party mages strutting around the Gallows with their staves in plain view, hovering rogue daggers, or weapons that intrude in screenshots.

Autorun & Tab Toggle
Very simple, but immensely helpful: No more running through the game with your finger on the Tab key in order to show all interactive items. (This script also works for DA:O)

No Gibbing!
Tired of your enemies exploding in ridiculous buckets of blood and limbs at a pin-prick? This mod turns it off.

Dragon Age Save Generator
Some save games were messed up in imports between DA:O and Origins DLC, leaving important points flagged improperly. Given how the gameworld in DA 2 reflects those decisions, with different quests and cameos depending on key decisions from the past, this can be major disappointment. With this save generator, you can set the plotpoints you should have had or want to try for DA 2 without replaying the entire DA:O and its DLC.

Chargen Revamp
This adds options to the Character Creator and Black Emporium Mirror, including allowing the iconic, default Hawke appearances to be edited.

Origins-style Hair Tweak
This hair appearance mod addresses the fake, ultra plastic look DA 2 hair tends to have, making it more similar to the style we saw in Dragon Age: Origins.

Improved Texture Mod
Improved textures for the game that work with DX9 rather than requiring DX11.

Sunnie’s Evolving Item Packs
Some of the game’s most awesome items, re-coded to level up with the user. No more debating whether to trade in the better-looking gear your character has outgrown for an uglier model with stats more appropriate to your level. Includes items like the Staff of Parthalan and iconic Champion Armor, even companion weapons and shields. At the link, scroll down to see the full list of mods. This modder’s offerings of useful items just keeps growing so check back often. If you love the Champion armor look, don’t miss Sunnie’s Champion Starting Gear which puts your new characters in evolving Champion gear, with iconic weapons, from the beginning. Another don’t-miss item pack from the same modder: Sunnie’s DA2 Custom Items – 120 of the game’s coolest weapons and armor now made available from in-game vendors (full list at the link).

Companion Armor Variations
During gameplay the armor of companions can change. This usually happens during their storylines, and, for some, only if romanced. This mod applies the variations for the love interests (of your choice, or all) without having to romance them or complete their storyline first.

Shelf-less Armor Variations
In this mod project, the DA 2 armor sets with odd crumb-catchers (such as the champion armor sets) are re-worked to remove the shelf-like protrusions. This is one of the most-requested modifications, and it’s great to see such excellent work being done for it.

Alternate Alistair
Gives all three versions of his cameo a little bit of a revamp to be more in keeping with his Origins appearance.

Alternate Sebastian
Exiled Prince DLC needed for this one, obviously.

Alternate Isabela
This mod gives different hair colors and other options for those who want them. There’s another mod to tweak her costume a little: Pants or Shorts for Isabela.

Alternate War Dog
Makes your war dog grey and black like one shown with the Black Emporium DLC description.

Alternate Anders
A lot changed about Anders between Awakening and DA 2, some things more implausibly than others. We may not be able to do anything about Cullen getting custody of the voice actor they shared and Maker-knows-what happening to Ser Pounce-a-lot in Amaranthine, but with appearance mods we can try to give him back a look more similar to his roguish Awakening appearance. For a slighter tweak, this Anders Mod (the one marked “oldhair”) uses his Awakenings hairstyle with his DA 2 face. Or, if you’d rather see him as the pretty boy heartbreaker, still, even with all that’s happened to him, try version 3.

Dragon Age 2 Companions

Like the original, Dragon Age 2 has companions and an approval system. This has been expanded to include rivalry as well as friendship and romance. If you’ve played Origins, you are probably used to giving supportive responses and gifts to gain maximum friendship with a companion and having that turn out well. In DA 2 the dynamic is different. The Friendship path can be “enabling” at times, while a Rivalry earning response is more honest where a true friend might disagree and be concerned for their friend. As we know from real life, enabling is not always a good thing.

Another interesting change from the previous Dragon Age is that the standard companion love interests are open to any gender, rather than restricted to one or the other.

Here are the companions:

Anders – The apostate mage companion from Awakening is back, now a former Grey Warden and a little different than we remember. The Spirit of Justice, also from Awakening, has joined with him, but Anders’ anger and resentment over how he’s been treated, as a Mage, has transformed Justice into Vengeance. Anders is a possible love interest.

Aveline Vallen is a strong and honorable warrior, and wife of a templar, who meets Hawke on their escape from Lothering.

Bethany Hawke is our hero’s apostate mage sister.

Carver Hawke is our hero’s warrior brother.

Fenris is elven, a former Tevinter slave, and potential love interest.

Isabela – The pirate duelist from Origins returns with a new look, still a potential romantic option.

Merrill – The Dalish mage from the DA:O Dalish Origin story is back, as well, also with an updated look. She is a potential love interest.

Sebastian Vael is a noble archer available to those with The Exiled Prince DLC. He is a possible love interest, but is an exception among them, offering only chaste romance and only to a female Hawke.

Varric Tethras is a dwarven rogue who narrates our adventures, as well as taking part.

Quick Dragon Age 2 Conversation Icon Guide

The general theme of your character’s conversational responses in Dragon Age 2 will affect the tone of voice and personality of your character, though choosing other types of choices often enough will swing it the other way again, so nothing is set in stone. If you’re wondering what those icons mean as you play the demo or get your hands on the full game, here’s a quick list:

Broken heart – rejects or ends romance
Checkmark – accepts the offer
Clenched fist – aggressive response
Crossed swords – initiates combat
Diamond – Charming response
Gavel/hammer – direct, blunt response
Halo over wings – helpful/kind
Head silhouette – calls on companion to allow them to respond
Heart – flirty response
Laughing facemask – Joker, humorous response
Olive Branch/leafy branch – Diplomatic response
X – Rejects the offer

Rarer Icons:
Falling Coins – Bribe, pay, or extort response.
Fingers crossed – Lie
Questionmark – Investigate, ask questions to learn more about something
Star Unique choice with unusual or special outcome

Wild Hunter Quick FAQ

Maplestory Wild Hunter Maplestory’s Wild Hunters were recently released.  Here’s a quick FAQ to answer the most frequent questions people have.

How do I make a Wild Hunter? You have to roll a new character from the character creation screen.

How do I capture a jaguar? When you take the Wild Hunter job, two new skills are added to your starter skill tab, just scroll down on that screen to find capture.  Hit your chosen jaguar once or twice to lower their health bar and then use your capture skill.

Where do I get a recovery chair? Resistance fighters receive a recovery chair from Surl’s water quest, I think it becomes available at level 18.  That seems like a long time, as the other classes get theirs in their tutorial quests, but if you’re doing all the quests in Edelstein this actually shouldn’t take long.

How do I complete Surl’s Water Thief Quest? The door is locked! The storage door locks when someone’s already in there dropping off water, so just wait and keep trying.  It will let you in when they’re done.

How do I find the entrance to Resistance HQ? The Headquarters entrance is a portal in a pipe just to the right of Belle the Officer, in Edelstein.

How do I get to Edelstein from Victoria Island? At Six Path Crossroad, climb up the tree in the center of the screen.  The portals for ships to Orbis, Ereve, and Edelstein are all hiding up there.
