Rune Factory Frontier FAQ

Wondering where to go to make money fast in Rune Factory Frontier, or where to find components to upgrade your equipment?

Rune Factory Frontier is a great game with many mysteries, and there are a few places it can be hard to figure out. After spending several weeks discovering those secrets for myself, I built this FAQ for other players.

So here you are: my Rune Factory Frontier FAQ.

Where do I get free starter tools?

Hoe: Mist.

Water can: Mist.

Axe: Talk to Stella, after the 4th of Spring. This can take many tries. This conversation chain might be connected to checking on Mist after Stella mentions Mist has been ill, as some claim, which happens on the 4th, but the randomness of it makes it hard to tell for certain.

Scythe: Talk to Erik after tilling some land. Keep talking to him, the conversation where it is given will pop up randomly.

Hammer: Enter Whale Island dungeon and keep going right. You’ll meet Melody and she’ll give you the hammer. It’s possible to dodge and run past the goblins to pick this up the first day, before you have weapons or defensive gear. This is your rock/mining hammer, and you can use it immediately on the mining rocks in Whale Island.

Pet Glove: Open and visit Whale Island (water the sprout in front of the clock tower to do this), then talk to Kross.

Farm Companion: Talk to Ganesha, repeatedly. She’ll talk to you about upgrading your tools eventually, and give you the book Farm Companion, containing tool upgrade recipes.

Quick-Step Cookbook: Talk to Rita, repeatedly. She’ll eventually give you the Quick-Step Cook cookbook, with recipes you can create without buying any tools other than your handy kitchen.

Harvester: Talk to Candy. When she first arrives is easiest, she’ll be upstairs in the clock tower after the cutscene. Ask her about Runeys and Rune wonders and she’ll give you the harvester. This is your all-purpose harvesting machine for animal products.

Fishing Rod: Talk to Cinnamon when she’s fishing. She fishes near your house often and shouldn’t be hard to spot.

(Cinnamon and Candy are Kanno’s granddaughters, you have to talk to him at the clock tower between 9-11 am, on or after the 9th of spring, to bring them to the village.)

How do I upgrade my equipment?

Armor, weapons, and farm equipment are all upgraded through the forge and craft table. You’ll need recipe books and various parts. Other than the first manual from Ganesha, you’ll be buying the books from Selphy after she takes up residence in the Rune Archives.

See my Rune Factory Frontier Crafting Guide for more detail.

How do I make weapons and gear?

Buy the forge from Lute when he’s set up in the town square on holidays. When the holiday is also a festival day, you’ll find him outside the church instead. You can buy the first one as soon as you’re ready and he comes through, giving you the craft table, for hats and other accessories, and the forge, for weapons. This will allow you to combine two items.

For stronger upgrades involving more components, you need to commission Kross to build you a forge area. The only difference between the options he gives is in appearance, I recommend saving beforehand and resetting to request another option if you don’t like the look. You can then buy better forges (and the attached craft table) from Lute.

Buy your recipe books from Selphy after she opens her shop in the library. She only offers basics at first but will offer stronger recipe books in time. If you missed out on basic recipe books when she upgraded, simply visit her shop on a Tuesday to buy the earlier editions. All recipe books are used automatically by clicking on the tool they require.

Where do I find … Ore?

Mining rocks in dungeons, primarily. Mini Golem (Lava Ruins 2F, 3F, Whale Island Flank) has a 10-15% chance each of dropping Scrap Iron, Iron, Copper, or Silver ore.

Mining locations:

Scrap Iron – Any mining rocks in dungeons.

Iron – The first parts of Whale Island and the Green Ruins.

Copper – The second half of Green Ruins and on Whale Island. Green Ruins boss drop. Drops from chests on the Whale Island Fin and early floors of Lava Ruins.

Silver – Lava Ruins, starting on floor 3. Also drops from chests in Lava Ruins.

Gold – Lower part of Lava Ruins. Lava Ruins boss drop. Mining rocks and chests in Snow Ruins.

Platinum – Mining rocks in Snow Ruins, and Whale Island Floating Chambers. Drops from final boss of Snow Ruins.

Are there easy ways to get money, fast?

Early in the game, your best bet for making fast money is growing turnips, and fishing. At 10g for a bag, turnips give you a great return, and they’re a fast crop to grow.

The bottom floors of ruins have a sweet fishing spot where you can make a lot of $$, as you get to each of those. The best other spot you have early access to is fishing the ocean. When you get to the bottom of the Green Ruins, you can make a few thousand an rp bar fishing there, even at lower fishing levels. It’s the little tiny trickle of water outside the boss door, and you do have to aim your cast just right or it won’t take. Don’t forget to use your special attack. When you clear to the bottom level of the Lava Ruins, there’s an even better spot. The farming plots nearby make great rp refillers. Plant something cheap that matches the season of the Ruins (Green Ruins is Spring, Lava Ruins is Summer) and, once it’s grown, just leave it. It will keep producing Runes.

Making money, once you know to focus on these, is really easy, but here are a few more tips. My first season, I planted turnips in all the 3×3 spaces I could clear, except a couple for fodder. I didn’t spend the RP on trying to clear larger rocks or stumps, leaving those for when I had a trained rock breaker (slime) and woodcutter (Little Mage – the shaman-looking guy in the Green Ruins who casts fire). My first monster was a harvesting pet (ant). Then the rock breaker and woodcutter. When I opened the Lava Ruins and was strong enough for it, I added a mower (the scythe wielding Ghost) and a waterer (the elephant, Elefun). This almost completely automates farming.

I spent most of first RP bar each day tilling, planting, and caring for turnips. Then I’d hit the bath house to refuel, and either dungeon delve or go fishing. As the rock breaker and woodcutter got more land cleared, and my tools were upgraded, I expanded my growing area – leaving a section for wild plants, keeping a section in fodder, and the rest planted with all types of the season’s crops as money became no problem. I liked variety, and wanted them for cooking, for the bonuses and energy refillers, so would save a few, but sold most raw. By the end of the growing season that first year, I was raking it in. I had to pick up the slack watering but otherwise had very little to do with the crops each day, was fishing the lowest level of the Lava Ruins, and I had made more money than anyone needs to spend in this game. Didn’t even bother with crops in winter, just fished, worked on the dungeons, and socialized.

Earliest Pet Monsters With Possible Jobs/Products

and where to find them

Farm Work Schedule

7am: Gather edible plants

11am: Harvest crops

3pm: Water plants

7pm: Gather lumber

10pm: Clear out rocks

1am: Mow grass

How it works: Once captured, pet the monsters daily to raise their relationship level with you. When they have a yellow smiley under their entry in the barn roster, you can put them to work. Talk to the monster to assign the job, which will then be scheduled to begin the next day. Producing pets will have the product available every few days after friendship begins. Going hungry reduces their relationship level, and they can stop working or stop producing if you’re out of food.

Gathering Wild Plants: Chitter, Squirrel-like Monster from Green Ruins.

Harvesting Crops: Goblin, early Whale Island

Ant, early Whale Island.

Breaking Rocks: Slime, early Whale Island, Green Ruins.

Gather Wood: Little Mage, Green Ruins

Production pets:

Eggs: Clucky, lower Green Ruins.

Milk: Buffamoo, Whale Island fin, Green Ruins.

Wool: Wooly, Whale Island fin, Green Ruins.

Honey: Hornet, Green Ruins.

Jewels/Wild Plants: Big Muck (the mushroom-looking mob), Green Ruins.

Seeds: Spring (the plant-looking mob), Green Ruins.

Mount:

Silver Wolf, Whale Island fin.

Why is there a purple elephant in my barn?

So, you’ve stumbled across this pink, teal, and purple elephant while exploring Whale Island, and now it’s in your barn and you can’t do anything with it. It doesn’t eat your food, you can’t pet it, ride it, or put it to work. What’s it for?

After Bianca and Tabatha arrive, visit their home in the morning (but after 9am) to set off an event involving the elephant. Bianca will ask for it. If you give her the elephant, she and Tabatha will stay in the village rather than going home at the end of summer.

It can take a few tries to get the event. If you’re having trouble getting it, there may be specific dates involved. Try the 10th, 11th, 14th, 26th, or, at the very latest, 27th of Summer. Other requirements to check if you’re having problems: you need well cared for, befriended monsters in your barn, for Tabatha to want to visit them. She must have sent the letter asking to visit them, and you have to have replied “yes.”

If you don’t already have the elephant, you can find it in the Whale Island Depths (second cave area) after you build your barn. It’s on the way to the Fin, and you should come across the cutscene easily.

Where did Uzuki go?

Attempting to enter the Inn sometime in mid spring, you’re run into by a new girl. She asks for your help, leaves the Inn, and vanishes. You look and can’t figure out where she went. Well, just wait. In a few days, she’ll move into a room at the Inn and take up a normal schedule without your doing anything further. Her daily schedule includes working out with her weapon outside the Inn all morning, then lunch in her room. She likes fishing in Lake Poli (near the entrance to the zone), and at the town square. If it’s raining, she’s in her room.

How do I help Uzuki find her brother?

This is part of her love event chain, and you can’t actually help her until you have her to 6 Love Points. When you do, find her at the observatory on a clear night. You will now be able to find a locked door on the 4th floor of the lava ruins.

When you get her to 8 LP, visit her when she’s in her room at the Inn. She’ll give you her hairpin to open the locked door. Take her what you find.

Now, each morning, visit the town square. Collect what you find there, seven times.

How do I make Bamboo Rice?

You’ll need the handy kitchen from Lute, but no other kitchen tools are necessary. The recipe is from the free starter cookbook Rita gives. If you don’t already have it, keep talking to her until she mentions cooking and she’ll give you the cookbook.

To make it, click on the cutting board area of your handy kitchen and you’ll see the recipe. Bamboo rice takes only two ingredients: Bamboo Shoot, and Rice. You can buy rice from Rita at night at the bar, or find it as a frequent chest drop on the Whale’s Fin. If you need a Bamboo Shoot, check the crates and chests in the Green Ruins.

Where do I get the recipe for Rosetta’s event?

After she’s told you three different things about her father’s progress, talk to Lara for the recipe. Make the item, and give it to Rosetta. Four days later, enter her shop again.

Who is the Ghost the villagers keep talking about?

Some people think Kross is the ghost, and if you meet Anette at his mailbox there’s a funny/sad event that seems to support that conclusion. But Lara is right when she says it’s just that the villagers don’t notice him. If you befriend him to 4 FP, and progress through his storyline, you’ll discover the truth about him.

The ghost is actually a girl, and you’ll know it’s her because when you meet her, she doesn’t appear on your relationships table. If you talk to her often, and talk to Stella each time you’ve encountered her, you’ll unlock the mystery.

The Singing Rock

The rock in the town square doesn’t play an obvious part in the storyline, and many finish it without solving the mystery of the rock and why it sings. I’m not sure how to get the event, but apparently there is one that gives big clue, in which Mist will tell your character she saw a ghost in the town square “slide through without making a sound”. This is apparently Iris Noire, who you will find singing underground in the storyline.

How do I open the gate on the Whale’s Fin?

(as spoiler free as possible)

You have to at least start the questline to befriend the girl who lives in the tower on the fin. You also need to have had three dreams, and might need to have a silver hammer.

Befriending the girl: Visit the tower soon after 6 pm for the first cutscene. Talk to Rosetta about Moondrop flowers, and purchase a bag of moondrop seeds. When you first cross the little farming plot outside the tower after she makes the comment about moondrop flowers and moonlight, your character will mention that conversation. Plant the moondrop seeds in the field outside the tower, and nurture until they’re grown and a rune appears. Return soon after 6pm for a second cutscene. You can harvest the flowers at this point, and give them to her daily to raise her friendship level. She loves tomato juice, you can give her one of those a day instead of or in addition to the flower for a big friendship point boost.

You must trigger the conversation with Rosetta and the follow-up comment on the field from your character to finish this step. If you’ve already grown the moondrops, you can still get the conversations and then proceed as normal, though I have only done this while the flowers were still in the field.

Silver Hammer: Have the upgrade book from Ganesha. The earliest you can find silver is in the mining rocks near some scorpions in the upper right corner of the third floor of the Lava Ruin. The scorpions are slow, and you can use the rocks to block, so they’re little trouble even in your earliest trips through. The stairs you first take down to the third floor open very close to this corner.

The dreams: Mist will mention dreaming, early on, and says she will ask the person to visit your dreams. Some have said going to bed early (before 10) is necessary to have the dreams, but I’ve had them on nights I went to bed after 2 am, so I’m not sure this matters.

When the requirements have been met, you’ll see a new cutscene when you attempt to enter the tower after 6pm, in which a man leaves the tower and goes through the gate. The way will now be open for you.

How do I open the locked door on Whale Island?

Whale Island contains several doors that have a small pillar beside them, that, if you click on it, says something about something fitting in there. What it takes is a Rune – Candy will make these for you from 10 runeys you take her. The first one in the Cave Depths will accept any Rune. Others you’ll come upon later in exploring the island may require specific Runes. The doors hide treasure behind them.

*if you wanted to know about the locked gate on the Fin of Whale Island, read the answer just above this.

Are there any shortcuts on Whale Island?

From the gate on the Fin, if you take the path to the left, part of the cliff is sparkling. Break it with your silver (or better) hammer for a shortcut between the Fin and the Cave Surface.

There’s a rope in the Tower of Life you can activate for a shortcut between the towers and the Cave Surface. When you leave the drain area through the tower/castle, going upstairs, you come out in a group of towers. The Tower of Life is the one just north of this start point. The rope is on broken stairs in the bottom portion of this tower.

Is there a way to get to Whale Island on a Holiday?

Yes. Eventually in conversation Lute will mention a sprout on an island in Lake Poli. When he does, go find it and water it. There you go, the way up on holidays.

How do I open the Green Ruins?

When Mist asks you to mow her yard, chop all the tall grass down with your Scythe. The entrance to the Green Ruins is hidden there.

How do I open the Lava Ruins?

Defeat the boss of the Green Ruins. Create a tree rune (Candy does this for you, using 10 tree runeys) and insert it in the slot in the tree growing beside the mountain path. Return the next day and the tree will be bigger, moving that big slab and opening the way for you.

How do I open the Snow Ruins?

Defeat the boss of the Lava Ruins to obtain the relic piece. Insert the relic piece in the stone next to the rune archives.

What are the dungeon seasons?

Whale Island fields can grow crops of any season. The other dungeons each have their own season and their fields can only grow the right crops for it. These are:

Green Ruins – Spring

Lava Ruins – Summer

Snow Ruins – Autumn
