Lucha Libre AAA 2010: Heroes del Ring

Fan of Lucha Libre? The Mexican style of pro wrestling known for its quick sequences of holds and moves as well as its daredevil dives (and of course colorful ornate masks) is getting its own game, Lucha Libre AAA 2010: Heroes of the Ring, and it’s coming north of the border!

Focusing on the Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA; “Assistance, Consulting and Administration” in Spanish) wrestling promotion,  Lucha Libre AAA 2010: Heroes of the Ring (formerly known as Lucha Libre AAA 2010: Héroes del Ring, AAA El Videojuego, or AAA The Videogame) is being made by Mexico City-based developer Slang (with Sabarasa Studios overseeing development of some versions) and is being published by Konami for the PlayStation 3, PSP, Xbox 360, and Wii and set to release Oct. 12, 2010.  The game is currently available for pre-order on Amazon.com under the title Lucha Libre AAA: Heroes of the Ring.

Joystiq recently posted Hands-on: Lucha Libre: AAA Heroes of the Ring about their impressions of an early build of the game from last week’s Konami Gamers Night. They mentioned Konami has promised a large set of features planned for the final game including “robust character creation and online matches, including máscara contra cabellera “mask versus hair” challenges where the loser either loses his mask (and identity) or gets his head shaved.”

According to Nate Ahearn, writing for IGN in Lucha Libre AAA: Heroes del Ring Hands-on, matches are influenced by fan excitement in the form of “popularity Stars”. You start out a match with access to a low level selection of moves, but throughout the fight you gain and lose popularity from your actions. Taunt your fallen opponent, interact with the fans, or bash him in the head with a steel chair and you’ll gain stars. As you gain stars, flashier higher level moves will be unlocked for you to employ, up to and including a super-move once the stars are maxed. He also got a El Elegido mask from the man himself, lucky bastard. Maybe I can talk him into putting it up in an online máscara contra cabellera, I’ll be happy to put up my long locks for such a prize. Lucharan!
